Spotted Lanterfly in New Jersey

The Wayne Public Library and Katie Scheidt of the Wayne Environmental Commission have invited Amy Rowe, Ph. D., County Agent II (Associate Professor) from Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, Cooperative Extension of Essex and Passaic Counties to join us for a public awareness and education session.  She will explain how to identify these insects and their egg masses, how the general public can help, and how to eradicate them for the safety of our agriculture.

The Spotted Lanternfly is a vicious, tree-killing insect that is causing devastation to trees in this area. New Jersey populations were first detected in 2018 and has been detected in every county since, although populations remain most troublesome in the counties bordering Pennsylvania. In response, the NJ Department of Agriculture has issued an eight-county quarantine (Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Salem, Somerset, and Warren).  The spotted lanternfly is now being seen in Passaic County, with several sightings right here in Wayne Township.

We are at a critical time.  Adults feed in large congregations from August – October and are easily recognizable. Mating and egg laying is delayed and egg laying does not occur until October.
