A message from the Wayne Boys & Girls Club
As our communities face the Coronavirus crisis, our young people are struggling -- from the fear that they or their loved ones may contract the virus to academic expectations to the separation from friends and extended family. Parents are stressed as they face loss of employment or cut in pay, helping their children with their schoolwork, and keeping their families safe during this frightening time.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest New Jersey continues our mission to serve young people (and their families) during the COVID-19 crisis. They are offering ongoing academic, emotional, and social support to the more than 5,200 youth that they serve, as well as to those beyond the membership. Since the closure of their sites on March 17th, the staff has worked diligently to remain connected to their members, and the community. This has been accomplished in many ways, including the launch of interactive meetups twice daily through The Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest New Jersey Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/bgcnwnj).The Meetup content drops at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm every weekday and includes live interactive story-time, crafts, educational activities and so much more! Themed days with dress-up and sharing of photos are encouraged! The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with over 16,000 views and that number continues to grow!
In addition to the Meetups, their team has created a Virtual Club & Information Station (https://sites.google.com/bgcnwnj.org/bgcnwnjvirtualclub) where the community can find a magnitude of resources to help them navigate this challenging time. The Virtual Club includes weekly challenges by age group, academic resources, STEM projects, and a separate page in which parents can access content on how to help their children with their studies, meal ideas, exercise videos, and other useful resources.
Their newly established “Zoom Rooms” is another effort to keep the youth connected with one another. The Zoom Rooms provide scheduled and staff supervised visual, social gatherings that allow their members to connect and participate in facilitated conversations with their peers.
Lastly, BGCNWNJ is partnering with The Wayne Township Parks and Recreation Department to host a ‘Power Up’ Power Bar collection for staff at St.Joe’s Medical Center. The medical staff has requested snacks that they can grab quickly while on the move. A no-contact drop off will be in place on April 15th from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm at both the Wayne and Pequannock clubhouses as well as Wayne Township Municipal parking lot on Valley Road for donations of Power Bars, Cliff Bars, Fruit Bars, Energy Bars, and Kind Bars. Visit the Virtual Club for more details.
How You Can Help: We recognize that the COVID-19 crisis has led to pay cuts, job loss, and significant financial burdens on many of the families in our community. To lessen the burden, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest New Jersey has created a Neighbors in Hardship Scholarship Fund. This fund will allow children of those families facing financial devastation to participate in our daycare and early education, before and after-school programs, summer, and vacation camps and in our recreational and competitive sports teams. Families will have many concerns and obstacles as we come out of this pandemic -- safe and reliable childcare should not be one of them. Please join us as we prepare to support our community as they rebuild their lives after this devastating crisis. Visit https://bgcnwnj.org/ to donate today. Thank you!
