WAYNE, NJ – A fire raged at the Wayne Five Guys Burgers & Fries location in the West Belt Shopping Plaza but was quickly subdued by a few off-duty firefighters who were nearby.

On Wednesday, May 20 at 10:06am, Wayne dispatch received the call and sent out Wayne Fire Companies #1, #2 and #5. But before they arrived, three off duty firefighters were nearby and assisted in extinguishing the fire and shutting down the gas line to the appliance that was burning.

Dry Chemical extinguisher product and smoke were visible when the fire department arrived.  The building area and grill vent shaft were checked for fire extension, but none were found.

The cause of the fire appeared to be the gas line feeding the large grill that is used to cook burgers.

“It may have become damaged, causing natural gas to leak which ignited the fire,” said Wayne Fire Commissioner Bob Minnarick.

Following the fire, Five Guys was closed pending Health Department approval to re-open.  Wayne Fire Bureau is investigating the cause and Wayne Health department was on the scene.
