Baseball: Caldwell Defeats Montclair-Kimberley, 14-3

WEST CALDWELL, NJ — The James Caldwell High School (JCHS) baseball team extends its winning streak to three with  14-3 victory via a mercy rule over the Montclair-Kimberley Academy (MKA) Cougars on Wednesday at the JCHS Lower Field.

The Chiefs find themselves in first place in the Super Essex Conference (SEC) Liberty league with a record of 12-4 overall following their victory over MKA.

As Bryce Bayard took control of the mound for the Chiefs, MKA struck early with two RBI to secure a 2-0 lead. However, the Cougars’ hot start did not deter the Chiefs, as Caldwell’s Charlie Fierro brought in two runs with the bases loaded, tying the game at two runs apiece.

Sophomore Frankie Gencarelli, continuing stellar form from the previous game, had a RBI single to bring the runner from second base. As Caldwell continued to get runners on the bags, a wild pitch by MKA brought in a run for the Chiefs, securing a 4-2 lead over MKA.

Caldwell’s Brian Rolser then hit a triple over the right fielder's head to bring in three runs, now increasing the Chiefs lead to 7-2.

The extra base hits for the Chiefs continued as Costa brought in two runs on a single to shallow left field. Mike Cavallo hit a bomb to center field, bringing in another two runs. Jon Housel tallied up another run for Caldwell with a RBI single, with Mike Cavallo scoring from second. A dinger from Gencarelli to left center field brought in two runs for Caldwell. Danny Cavallo hit to shallow right field, but a lack of communication by MKA cost the Cougars another run.

The final run of the game came from MKA in the fifth inning, with a RBI single.

The mercy rule was put into effect following the top half of the fifth inning, with Caldwell steamrolling over MKA by a score of 14-3.

Caldwell will defend its home-field turf as the Chiefs face Newark Tech (6-6) on Thursday.
