WEST CALDWELL, NJ - The James Caldwell High School baseball team overcame an 8-3 deficit in the final inning to defeat Cedar Grove High School, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon. The game entered extra innings after the Chiefs scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend play.
Despite being down for the entirety of the game and committing a few errors and baserunning mistakes, the team rallied.
What was initially a one-sided game turned in a thrilling finish as the home team’s bats came alive at the end of the game. Jon Housel’s RBI double scored the winning run. Dan Cavallo, pinch-running for Jon Demattheis, who reached on a hit-by-pitch, scored the winning run from first.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Cedar Grove took a 9-8 lead in the top of the ninth. Mike Cavallo’s solo home run in the bottom of the ninth tied the game and two batters later Housel’s double sealed the victory.
The victory gave Caldwell a 2-1 record for the season and drops Cedar Grove to 1-3 on the season. The Chiefs return to the field Monday to take on Glen Ridge at Hurrell Field in Glen Ridge.
