WEST CALDWELL, NJ — After the Nutley Raiders boys basketball team fell behind for most of Friday night’s game, points added by Marty Higgins and Anthony Fabiano in the fourth quarter lifted the team to a victory over the James Caldwell Chiefs.

With the 46-40 on-the-road win, the Raiders improved to (8-9, 6-3 SEC). The home team fell to (4-10, 3-7 SEC).

Caldwell’s offense was led by James Miller, who racked up 16 points throughout the game.

After a close first quarter, Raiders junior Elmer Zamora fit in one last shot before the buzzer, bringing his team just one point behind the Chiefs.

After the home team scored just six points in five and a half minutes, Raiders junior Matt Schettino scored his team’s first shot of the second quarter less than two minutes before halftime. The Chiefs led 20-16 at halftime.

“We got to make shots,” said Raiders Head Coach Bob Harbison. “We didn’t make many in the first half.”

The Raiders were able to get just two points behind with free throws by Zamora in the third quarter, but wound up trailing 33-26 at the buzzer.

After a layup by Higgins in the final quarter put the Raiders a point behind the Chiefs, the sophomore followed up with a three-pointer, which gave his team a 37-34 advantage.

“Marty made a couple, got us back in it, that kind of changed the tempo,” said Harbison.

After Caldwell tied the game, Fabiano added another three-pointer 2:35 before the final buzzer, which put the Raiders in the lead for the rest of the game.

Harbison explained that the opponent put forth good defense, which set his team back early on.

“Caldwell does a good job defensively,” the coach said. “They know what we want to do offensively.”

Higgins led the Raiders with 18 points, while junior Matt Schettino contributed 11. Fabiano added another 10 points.

The Chiefs will travel to Weequahic on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip off.

A Special Thank You For Helping Us Weather The Storm

June 18, 2018

About a month ago, on May 15, 2018, something happened to me and my family that changed our lives. An act of God, apparently a “microburst,” tore through our front yard, and uprooted an approximately 19,000 pound tree. The tree fell into my 8 month old’s bedroom destroying the entire structure of our home.

My husband, with what I call divine intervention, told us to go ...
