ROSELAND, NJ Butterflies are once again coming to the Essex County Environmental Center, located at 621B Eagle Rock Avenue in Roseland, with the “Butterfly Tent Safari” open to the public from July 15 through July 29.

The Butterfly Tent Safari is an interactive display where visitors can observe hundreds of butterflies while walking through a tent.

“The Butterfly Tent Safari at the Essex County Environmental Center is an interactive display of live native butterflies for families to observe and enjoy,” said Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo. "Spend your time in the tent feeding the butterflies or simply marveling at their beauty and delicate nature. Listen to a story, make butterfly crafts, or just take some time to witness the magnificence of nature at our Environmental Center."

The tent will be open to visitors Mondays through Fridays from noon to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It is closed on Sundays. A $2-per-person admission is suggested with all proceeds going to the Essex County Parks Foundation.

In addition to the public viewing times, the Environmental Center is offering butterfly-themed family programs that include access to the butterfly tent on Saturdays July 15, 22 and 29. Cost of the family programs is $8 per child and $10 per adult. Pre-registration is required. Participation in these programs also includes time in the butterfly tent.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Saturday, July 15 at 12:30 p.m.: Appropriate for children ages 3-to-5 years. “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” will take participants on a butterfly parade around the trails and learn about a day in the life of a monarch butterfly.

  • Saturday, July 22 at 10:30 a.m.: Appropriate for children ages 5 and older. “Buzz into Action with Insect Education” is a family fun and hands on presentation about bugs and butterflies.

  • Saturday, July 29 at noon: Appropriate for adults and children ages 8 years and older. “Butterfly Gardening Workshop” will be led by Essex County Rutgers Master Gardener Jean Greeley, who will talk about butterfly gardening.

  • During the month of July, “Bold, Brilliant Butterflies of Northern New Jersey,” a photography exhibit by Janet Markman, will be on display at the Essex County Environmental Center.

Letter to the Editor: Don't Complain. Vote!

April 12, 2018

Don’t Complain; Vote!

It’s no secret that people have strong feelings about what’s happening in our country. It’s also true that much of politics is local. In November, 11th District residents will have the opportunity to choose a new congressional representative who will not only serve as a critical check on the federal level, but also determine how our distract fares ...

Cluelessly Clueless

I teenaged my way through high school under the assumption that my parents had no idea what I was doing.  I like to think I was pretty good at withholding information and presenting situations in ways that were other than they really were.

Still, sometimes they found things out.  Like the time my friends plopped me on our front door step at one o'clock in the morning ...
