CALDWELL, NJ — During the recent borough council meeting held on October 20, Council President Christine Schmidt during the consent agenda introduced a resolution that would prohibit the long-standing tradition of trick or treating along Bloomfield Avenue this year due to COVID-19 in order to protect the health and safety of shop owners, employees and residents.
The resolution as drafted required that any children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult from 6 p.m. on October 30 through 6 a.m., November 1 throughout the borough. Furthermore, the resolution stated that trick or treating will not be allowed along Bloomfield Avenue from October 29-November 1.
Councilman Jonathan Lace questioned Police Chief James Bongiorno if the resolution as written would be enforceable, and Bongiorno confirmed it would not be. The council ultimately changed the language to state the children “should be accompanied by an adult” not “must be accompanied by an adult.”
