NEWARK, NJ - An 18-year-old Caldwell resident has been arrested in connection with the murder of his cousin last month.

Jose Lazaro Gonzalez, 18, of Caldwell, has been charged with murder, possession of a weapon, and possession for unlawful purpose in the killing of 27-year-old Marvin Lazaro on Feb. 26, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Caldwell Police Chief James H. Bongiorno.

Lazaro and Gonzalez were cousins. Lazaro was fatally stabbed in an apartment he shared with three other men in the 400 block of Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell at about 2:30 p.m. that day. The victim and his roommates, all cousins, are believed to be from Guatemala.

After fleeing New Jersey, Gonzalez was arrested at a Greyhound Bus station in Kansas City, Mo. He is awaiting extradition. The homicide is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force and the Caldwell Police Department.
