CALDWELL, NJ - "What was the original name of Caldwell?" On Friday, March 28, students from Grover Cleveland Middle School (GCMS), Caldwell, paraded their knowledge of science, music, literature, local history and more, at the third annual Academic Bowl. Students from grades six through eight compete in teams comprised of six representatives from within their pillar of character house. This year, the winning team represented the Citizenship house.

To establish the teams for the school-wide competition, each house competed within itself with students randomly assigned to teams with each grade being represented on each team. The winning team from each house then competed at the school-wide competition.

To compete, the teams sat at tables in front of their house sections, using paper and marker to answer the questions that were projected onto the gym wall. Each team then received a point for each correct answer. Questions ranged from, “What was the original name of Caldwell?” to “How many Disney Resorts are there in the world?” Overall, the competition was very close, with the winning team edging the competition by just a few points.

This year’s winning team included sixth graders Sam Mulik and Ryan Spezzacatena, seventh graders Spencer Solomon and Nick Castellano, and eighth graders Luc Perret and Kevin Perry. The names and house of the winning team are on a trophy displayed in the school’s award case. The event is planned to be an annual competition.

Let the Games Begin

I am truly awed by the Olympics.  Watching these superb young athletes on TV inspires me to renew my membership to the gym and pursue my lifelong dream of taking home the gold.

The problem is that in my deluded head, I can see actually see myself standing atop the podium.  I am wrapped in a puffy designer ski coat with a huge piece of bling slung around my neck ...
