FAIRFIELD, NJ — The Fairfield Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to the Skyline Auto Auction, located at 100 Route 46 East, initially for a transformer fire at approximately 7:47 a.m. on Feb. 3. Eventually, the electrically charged wires in the area of the transformer came down on top of several vehicles.
Due to the downed wires and the unsafe condition that existed, the fire department was initially unable to conduct fire suppression operations until PSE&G could shut down power to the lines. The fire was extinguished around 9 a.m.
Approximately 20 cars were damaged to various degrees. There were no injuries. Traffic on Route 46 was affected slightly at the intersection of Clinton Road due to the traffic signal being out. The North Caldwell Fire Department relocated to Fairfield in order to assure fire protection for the township.
