NEWARK, NJ — At-Large Essex County Freeholder Patricia Sebold of Livingston recently sponsored a commendation honoring Alanson Partelow on his retirement from Livingston High School after 45 years of “outstanding and dedicated service.” The Partelow family joined the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders at its Jan. 18 meeting, where longtime educator and volleyball coach was recognized with a formal citation.

Sebold shared remarks recognizing the hard work and dedication it takes to teach and coach students, especially leading them on to win several championships as Partelow did. As a former teacher herself and resident of Livingston, Sebold expressed her enthusiasm in recognizing him for all his accomplishments.

Partelow retired from teaching health, physical education and drivers’ education at LHS in 2009 after 40 years of service and retired from coaching volleyball in 2016 after 45 years of service.

A 1965 graduate of Union High School and a 1969 graduate of Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey), Partelow became a Health and Physical Education Teacher and began his career at MHS. He started his first coaching position in the boys’ soccer program as an assistant coach from 1969-1970.

At Millburn, Partelow helped start the girls’ volleyball program in the spring of 1971, continuing to serve as a coach for the boys’ soccer program as well as the girls’ head volleyball coach. He went on to become the first head coach of the Seton Hall University Women’s Volleyball Team in 1977, where he served for two seasons.

Partelow was also the first coach of the MHS girls’ soccer program in 1980, winning two Northern Hills Soccer Conference titles. After transferring to LHS in 1988, he continued to coach volleyball at MHS. He also led the LHS girls’ soccer team in 1988 and won three Essex County Championships in 1991, 1992 and 1993.

Partelow spearheaded the LHS girls’ volleyball program in 1995, and, with the assistance of the late Bob Cece, formed the LHS boys’ volleyball program in the spring of 2000.

Under his leadership, the LHS boys and girls’ volleyball team have collectively won 12 Conference Championships, eight Essex County Championships, three New Jersey Sectional Championships and two New Jersey State Championships. The girls’ team won a total of 887 games and the boys’ team won a total 382 games during his time as a coach.

Partelow has received several awards, including: “Coach of the Year” (1993); New Jersey Star Ledger State Coach of the Year for Girls (2004) and Boys (2008); NJSIAA “Coach of the Year;” National Federation of High School Coaches “Coach of the Year” (2013); NJSIAA State Volleyball Legends Award, Girls’ State Coach of the Year (2011), and National High School Coach of the Year (2012).

After 45 years of coaching, Partelow was also recognized by the Livingston Board of Education in December and was met with a standing ovation.

Expressing that his 45 years of coaching left him with numerous long-lasting memories, Partelow credited his success to his wife of 47 years, Shirley, for supporting him throughout his career. He also said he is the proud parent of three sons, Lance, Brian, and Christopher, and proud grandparent to five grandchildren.

Thanking the board for its commendation in January, Partelow said he has always put his players and school first and that he is humble and grateful for his success as a coach in Essex County for the past 45 years.

I am less proud to admit that, of those Marvel movies that I can remember, I didn’t understand any of ...
