Fairfield Resident Assists in Apprehension of Escaped Shoplifting Suspect

Keenan Jenkins, 28, of Teaneck arrested on two counts of shoplifting, escape, hindering apprehension, resisting arrest and theft in Fairfield Credits: Fairfield Police Department

FAIRFIELD, NJ — A Fairfield resident who was alerted by the local police notification service Nixle about the ongoing search of a shoplifting suspect that fled the scene at the Target located on Route 46 East while still in his handcuffs assisted in his eventual arrest on Sunday night.

Keenan Jenkins, 28, of Teaneck was arrested on two counts of shoplifting, escape, hindering apprehension, resisting arrest and theft after he was placed into handcuffs for shoplifting at Target and then fled westbound on foot, disappearing from the officer’s sight. After the Fairfield Police Department sent out a Nixle alert advising citizens with a description of the suspect, a citizen notified the department of an individual seen crossing Route 46 from the westbound to the eastbound side in area of Dale Drive, which eventually led to his apprehension.

“This was a great cooperative effort, not only by the responding police personnel but more importantly, by a member of the community who took the time to get involved by signing up for police advisements and then by acting on it when they received information about a wanted criminal,” said Chief of Police Anthony Manna.

According to Manna, asset protection officers from Target contacted the department in regard to a shoplifting incident that was in progress at approximately 6:37 p.m. on Sunday night. Officers responded to the location, which has been the victim of a series of similar shoplifting incidents in the last few months, and came upon Jenkins exiting the fitting room after having opened and removed a Play Station 4 gaming system valued at approximately $250.

At this time, Jenkins was arrested, placed into handcuffs, and escorted to a patrol car for the purpose of being transported to the police station to be processed.

According to police, Jenkins fled through the parking lot on foot when the officer went to unlock his patrol car. He was seen crossing Route 46 to the westbound side and then disappeared from the officer’s sight.

Police then established a perimeter with the assistance of police officers from the Cedar Grove, Lincoln Park, Wayne and Woodland Park Police Departments as well as a K-9 unit from the Essex County Sheriff’s Department. Also assisting were New Jersey state troopers from the Totowa barracks as well as their K-9 and aviation units.

Just before 8 p.m., the Fairfield Police Department sent out the Nixle alert and received a response from a receiving citizen.

Officers immediately responded to the area described by the citizen and identified Jenkins near the Synergy gas station nearby. Upon seeing the officers, Jenkins fled once again, but was eventually apprehended behind Ashley Furniture.

In addition to the charges above, Jenkins was also found to have active arrest warrants issued by the Hackensack and Paramus Municipal Courts, according to Fairfield police.

A Special Thank You For Helping Us Weather The Storm

June 18, 2018

About a month ago, on May 15, 2018, something happened to me and my family that changed our lives. An act of God, apparently a “microburst,” tore through our front yard, and uprooted an approximately 19,000 pound tree. The tree fell into my 8 month old’s bedroom destroying the entire structure of our home.

My husband, with what I call divine intervention, told us to go ...
