NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — The West Essex field hockey team capped an undefeated season with a 5-0 victory over Millburn for the NJSIAA North East A championship Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Knights finished their campaign with a 12-0-1 record. West Essex captured the 2019 overall Group 2 state championship, but, in 2020, teams are not playing down to a single champion in each group.
West Essex scored all of its goals in the first half, breaking it open with three goals in the second quarter.
Cait Lutz scored three goals and assisted on one, and Gianna Macrino had two goals and one assist. Hannah Marcotrigiano, Halle Aschenbach, Gianna Puorro and Carly Iacullo each doled out one assist. Abby Zanelli made three saves for West Essex, which unloaded 41 shots on goal to Millburn's six shots.
West Essex had beaten Millburn (10-4-1), 9-1, in the regular season, but the Millers were one of only two teams to score at all against West Essex all season. Oak Knoll and West Essex played to a 2-2 tie on Nov. 12.
