Girls Lacrosse: Caldwell Earns Third-Consecutive Victory Over Livingston

WEST CALDWELL, NJ — A solid all-around effort by the Caldwell girls lacrosse team resulted in a 12-9 victory over Livingston on Friday.

“We had a rough week last week and we’ve come out of that funk [with] a couple nice wins,” said Caldwell head coach Angela Giampino-Vasi. “I feel like overall we feel more positive and we’re playing better together as a team.”

Caldwell played a solid first 10 minutes, taking a 4-1 lead in the process. Freshman Caitlyn Buermann joined seniors Sam Gargiulo and Vienna Cocca to stake the Lady Chiefs to the early lead. Their coach attributed the early-scoring streak to a more-collective approach than in recent games.

“More people have been stepping up and getting involved in the plays and I think that’s been a domino effect,” said Giampino-Vasi.

Caitlyn Buermann, a freshman who has been crucial to the team’s success this season, continued her hot streak on Friday. Although not primarily known as a scorer, she has collected 10 points in the team’s last three games and made a name for herself.

“I think now that she has more experience she’s comfortable now,” said Giampino-Vasi. “I can put her on the field anywhere. I think she’s definitely more comfortable with the team and everyone is more comfortable with each other. She knows where her teammates are going and what to look for and they feed off of each other.”

Caldwell continued her strong performance for the remainder of the half, taking a 9-5 lead into the break. Veteran leaders Sam Gargiulo and Brittany Costigan collected three of the five goals before the midway point prior to finishing the game with goal tallies of three a piece.

As the game neared its end, Livingston rallied to get within two goals with 2:09 minutes remaining. Livingston’s Kelly O’Connor, who scored three goals on the afternoon, helped create a Lancers rally and an uncomfortable last few minutes for Caldwell.

Feeling the game may be slipping away, Caldwell turned to senior goaltender Rachel Snider to close the door. Snider notched nine second-half saves, four of which came within the last five minutes to seal the victory for Caldwell.

“She had great saves for us especially at the end and they were real key to helping us win,” said Giampino-Vasi.

The defeat at the hands of Caldwell broke a three-game winning streak for the previously 9-3 Lady Lancers squad. Livingston will head to Montclair Kimberley on Saturday, hoping to get back on the winning track and keep pace atop the division.

For Caldwell, the victory improves the Chiefs to a 9-6 overall record on the season, as they have now won three-consecutive games. The Lady Chiefs will have a few days off before hosting Westfield on Tuesday—a game Giampino-Vasi said the team is excited for.

A Special Thank You For Helping Us Weather The Storm

June 18, 2018

About a month ago, on May 15, 2018, something happened to me and my family that changed our lives. An act of God, apparently a “microburst,” tore through our front yard, and uprooted an approximately 19,000 pound tree. The tree fell into my 8 month old’s bedroom destroying the entire structure of our home.

My husband, with what I call divine intervention, told us to go ...
