WEST CALDWELL, NJ - The Caldwell girls lacrosse team started off its season with an 18-17 victory over conference foe Morris Knolls on Wednesday. The leading goal scorer for the Chiefs was senior Sam Gargiulo, who scored her 100th career goal last season. She, along with fellow seniors Brittany Costigan and Allie Behre will be expected to lead the team, according to head coach Angela Giampino-Vasi.
Gargiulo, a midfielder, also led the team in assists and groundballs last year and will be leading a team working on improving its record from last season. Costigan and Behre also both scored for Caldwell in the victory against Morris Knolls. Freshman Caitlyn Buermann, who was making her Caldwell high school debut, also scored three goals. Giampino-Vasi mentioned both Buermann and Izzy Carvela as two of the most promising freshmen on the team.
To improve on last season, both returning starters and promising freshmen will continue to work throughout the season.
“We have been working a lot on off-ball movement and on being more of an offensive threat and being able to finish when we have the ball on attack,” Giampino-Vasi said. “Defensively, we have been working on sliding harder and faster to the ball and on double teams.”
The offense appears to be clicking as evidenced by their 18-goal output, and will continue to work on the defensive side of the ball throughout the season. The Lady Chiefs return to the field on Friday, when they take on Freedom conference opponent Morristown-Beard.
