FAIRFIELD, NJ - It was a foodie's paradise in Fairfield as JJ's Hotdogs and Lola's Ice Cream and Sweet Shoppe each hosted ribbon-cutting ceremony events on Sunday to celebrate their grand openings.
Joseph and Gena Ugliarolo, owners of JJ's Hotdogs at 572 Route 46 East, welcomed Mayor James Gasparini as they cut the ribbon alongside family and friends, including property owner Dr. Maheta.
"Now I don't have to drive all the way to Newark to get a hotdog", said Gasparini. "I've been going to JJ's Hotdogs since back in the day and the hotdogs are as good here in Fairfield as on the truck."
Joseph Ugliarolo explained that JJ's Hotdogs has used the same family recipe since 1971, when hotdog truck was first established in Newark. Since opening in Fairfield, he said that he and Gena have been "feeling the love" from the township.
"A lot of our customers from our food truck in Newark have migrated to this area, and we felt that Fairfield was perfect for our first brick-and-mortar location," he said.
Property owner Dr. Maheta shared that plans are in place to expand parking on the property and to make the entrance more accessible from Route 46 East.
The food and fun continued later in the day as locally owned Lola's Ice Cream and Sweet Shoppe, located at 244 US Highway 46 East in the Calandras Plaza in Fairfield, also welcomed Gasparini as the celebratory ribbon was cut alongside owners, the Dinardo family, and Lola’s very own namesake, Lola Dinardo, as well as family and friends.
To show their appreciation, Lola’s treated their guests to sweets from their candy buffet and face painting from local business Explore Your Art. Raffle tickets were also distributed for two large gift baskets and gift cards worth $20 each. As a special "topping," the first 50 guests received a gift with purchase that included bubbles and special treats.
Lola’s is currently open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays 12 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
