Police Chase Leads to Drug Arrest of Fairfield and West Caldwell Residents

CEDAR GROVE, NJ - An attempted motor vehicle stop led to a brief police chase and drug arrest in Cedar Grove early Friday morning. Steven Collin of Fairfield and Matthew Baynes of West Caldwell were both arrested in this incident. 

Sgt. Jose Rodriguez was on patrol when he observed a vehicle speeding on Pompton Ave. Sgt. Rodriguez attempted to stop the vehicle, but the operator failed to stop and brief pursuit began.

Officer Christopher Lynch assisted Sgt. Rodriguez and the vehicle was eventually stopped on Pompton Ave. at East Lindsley Road.

Collin, 27, was placed under arrest for eluding. Baynes, 26, who was a front-seat passenger, was also arrested for an outstanding criminal warrant from Woodland Park Municipal Court.

According to police, Baynes was unable to post the required bail and was turned over to Woodland Park Police. Collin was charged with eluding and possession of CDS (Cocaine). He was transported to the Essex County Jail.
