NORTH CALDWELL, NJ - A five-run second inning gave West Essex a foothold en route to an 8-4 victory over Indian Hills in the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA Section 1, Group 3 state tournament on Tuesday.

Julia Vardiman went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Lilly James was 3-for-4 with one RBI for West Essex (22-5), which overcame an early 2-0 deficit with its five-spot in the second inning.

Alexa Vardiman delivered a two-run single and Bridget Betley and Amanda Garofalo each had two hits and scored two runs in the victory. Sami Huetter scattered eight hits to pick up the victory, displaying her usual impeccable control, with no walks to accompany five strikeouts.
