CALDWELL, NJ - The violent thunderstorms that barreled through Essex County Tuesday afternoon left some damage in their wake in Caldwell and West Caldwell.

In Caldwell, lightning struck a house on Oak Ridge Road, igniting a minor fire shortly after 4:30 p.m. The Caldwell Fire Department responded and quickly brought the blaze under control, according to Caldwell police.

In West Caldwell, the storm brought down transformers on both Runnymede Road and Bloomfield Avenue near Russillo Restaurant. Power was quickly restored to those areas by early Tuesday evening, according to West Caldwell police.

The severe thunderstorms brought temporary relief to a stifling day of heat and humidity -- the fourth consecutive day of temperatures well in excess of 90 degrees in the Caldwells. More thunderstorms are in the forecast for later this week.
