The West Caldwell Public Library celebrates the culture and history of India with the addition of two new books to its collection by local author Sarjerao Ramrao Gharge-Deshmukh.

Mr. Gharge-Deshmukh is the author of Johar: History of Mewad and 96-K: The Supreme Code, Maratha Cluster of 96 Clans, both of which explore the history and culture of the people and places of India. Johar is a collection of stories and legends illustrating the history of the people of Mewad, a region in western India, and 96-K is a non-fiction work exploring the origin and structure of the 96 family clans of the Marathas, as well as a historical study of the ancient region of Maharashtra beginning in 500 B.C.

Born and raised in the Princely City of Baroda, India, Mr. Gharge-Deshmukh became a U.S. citizen in 1967 and has been a resident of West Caldwell since the 1970’s. He was an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer in the nuclear power industry for 26 years before turning his attention to researching historical and cultural events in his native land, and he is currently pursuing a PhD in History through Shivaji University, Kolhapur India. Mr. Gharge-Deshmukh and his wife are also actively involved in a Trust foundation devoted to starting and running a hostel that provides free room, board, clothing and medical care for needy children from Western Ghats.

Library Director Samantha McCoy said, “We are thrilled to highlight not only a local author, but also the cultural diversity of West Caldwell. Mr. Gharge-Deshmukh is a ‘library champion’ and understands that the library is more than a repository for books. It’s also a community center where ideas and information can be shared. Through books like his, I hope that we can become a stronger and more compassionate community.”

Johar and 96-K will both be available for borrowing by West Caldwell Public Library cardholders and members of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System.

For more information about Mr. Gharge-Deshmukh or his books, please contact the West Caldwell Public Library reference desk at 973-226-5441 or wcalref@bccls.org.

Extra Time

It was close to 70 minutes into the match and I had to go to the bathroom.  Badly.

As fans watching the World Cup know too well, bathroom breaks are a serious dilemma, especially for those who don’t have a TV in the loo.  This biological necessity is exasperated by beer, which during World Cup matches also fuels a strong propensity to throw chairs and instigate riots.
