NEWARK, NJ — West Caldwell resident Sgt. John Sherwood, Jr. was recently presented with a “Life Saving Award" from Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura during Police Week ceremonies at the Veterans Courthouse in Newark.

While off duty on June 17, 2016, Sgt. Sherwood was responded to a neighbor's backyard, where he observed an unconscious and unbreathing pregnant female on the ground. After a third cycle of life-saving CPR techniques, the female finally began breathing and regained consciousness. The mother and baby are now healthy and living in West Caldwell.

The county presented the sergeant with the award on May 17 for his actions and initiative.
