West Essex Athlete of the Week

West Essex Baseball's Max Ruvo Named Athlete of the Week

NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — The West Essex High School baseball team is off to a hot start, and a major reason for it has been the play of star outfielder Max Ruvo, who has been named as TAPinto West Essex’s first Athlete of the Week for the Spring 2018 season.

“I’m just trying to do what helps the team best,” said Ruvo. “Everyone is rallying around each other right now, and when we’re playing for each other unselfishly, I think everything comes together as a whole.”

This past week, Ruvo showed how much of a catalyst he could be for the Knights squad. The outfielder produced seven hits, five runs batted in (RBI), four runs scored, three stolen bases and a homerun in a three-game span.

“I came out a little slow this year, so I just focused on having quality at-bats in games,” said Ruvo.

For Ruvo, the hot streak has been a pleasant surprise. After a slow start in which he mustered only one hit in two games, the junior altered his focus and decided to play for his teammates, ultimately changing his luck in the process.

“We just focused on the little things like waiting for your pitch,” he said. “I let that get away from me and when I started playing for the team instead of myself, that’s when everything started clicking.”

Ruvo had his best game of the season early last week when West Essex took on Cedar Grove. In an exciting 9-8 victory, Ruvo tallied two hits—one of which was a homerun—two runs batted in and two runs scored to finish off the Panthers.

“Everything that we do in practice is leading up to these games and we know how hard we have to work to win these games,” said Ruvo. “Not every one is going to be easy, but we came through at the end and we’re happy to have a win.”

With Ruvo at the helm, the Knights are now 6-0 on the season and sit atop their conference and division with high expectations ahead.

“We’re excited, the team is excited,” said Ruvo. “We knew what we were capable of early in the season and it’s all starting to come together. We believed in ourselves, we knew it was going to happen it was just a matter of when it would come together and it’s coming together early and we’re excited.”

While Ruvo and the team as a whole are proud of their accomplishments, they know the season is still far from finished. Taking a detailed approach, Ruvo and company have set their sights on the next game to continue their winning streak.

“We’re just sticking to the process,” said Ruvo. “Every game that’s the biggest game of the year, it’s always the next one for us…we try to play our best game every day, that’s how we view everything.”

A Royal Pain

I went to a big wedding over the weekend.  It was in England.

I like to think I was invited, but according to the Royal Guards and the Thames Valley Police I was not.  But more about that later.

You see, not too long ago I received an evite addressed to me from H&M@royalwedbot.co.uk.  Curiously, it was in my spam folder with a warning message. For an evite it was pretty ...
