JEFFERSON, NJ - The West Essex High School golf team earned the title at this year's North 2, Group 2 Sectional Championship held at Bowling Green Golf Course in Jefferson.
Coach John Regan said that the 2019 season for the West Essex Knights Golf team has been very successful.
"Our match record is 12-4 with big wins over Seton Hall Prep (2x), Livingston, MKA, Montclair, Parsippany and Montville," he said. "We competed in two tournaments as a team and did well as a team."
On April 22, the Knights played in the Blue Devil Invitational tournament at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield against some of the best teams in North Jersey. West Essex placed ninth out of 15 teams in a very difficult field of teams, according to Regan. In that tournament, Garrett Kessler placed second as an individual with a 72.
The next day, the Knights played in the K-Golf Classic Tournament at Berkshire Valley Golf Course in Oak Ridge, where the team placed third overall and Kessler once again placed second individually with a 72.
In the Essex County Tournament on May 6 at Francis Byrne Golf Course in West Orange, the Knights placed third overall behind Newark Academy and Champion, Millburn. Kessler placed second again here, with a 73 as an individual.
The team's 12-4 record qualified the Knights to play in the North 2, Group 2 Sectional Tournament at Bowling Green Golf Club in Milton. In cold and rainy conditions, West Essex looked to realize the goal of winning a state sectional championship and with a 339 team score.
The Knights placed as the best team in both sections while winning the section championship. At the tournament, Kessler placed second with a 77—only stroke behind the low individual. Brendan Huelbig placed third as an individual with an 81. Dean Troaino, Anthony Slekis and Ava Lozito also contributed to the win.
Winning the Sectional Championship means the Knights will play in the New Jersey Tournament of Champions at Hopewell Valley Golf Club on Monday, May 20 in hopes of winning the Group 2 Championship.
Regan also added that Ava Lozito has been playing well all year and has qualified as an individual for the Girls Tournament of Champions at Royce Brook Country Club in Ringoes.
"Ava is ranked as the No. 12 girls golfer in New Jersey after finishing her freshman year as Second Team All State," he said.
