NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — The West Essex High School field hockey team, which defeated Eastern, the top-ranked team in the state, to win the Tournament of Champions this season, was honored by the West Essex Regional Board of Education on Monday.

In introducing the commendation, Superintendent of Schools Barbara Longo noted that the team this year had a record of 24-1 and outscored its opponents 163-16 on its way to becoming the No. 1 seed in the state tournament.

She added that West Essex star Lia Sinesi scored her 101st career goal in sudden death overtime in the state championship game to lead the Knights to their first victory ever over Eastern.

Longo noted that the district team logged an 89-6-1 record over four years while outscoring its opponents 543-44.

In addition to athletic director Anthony Minnella and head coach Jill Cosse, the team members thanked assistants Marissa Becker, Jarrod Cappello, Gianna D’Urso, Noeli Gomez, Erica Klein, Abby Martin and Bettina Plesnitzer.

They also said the team’s victories would not have been possible without the support of Longo, the board of education members and their parents.

In another round of commendations, the board also cited board vice president Deborah Sacco-Calderone, with 13 years of service, and board member Maryadele Wojtowicz, with 10 years of service, for their contributions both to their local school boards and the regional board.
