NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — Ryan Gupta, Director of Curriculum and Instruction for West Essex Regional Schools, presented the results of the 2019 Assessment Reports during last week’s board of education meeting.
“As proud as we are of all the high-achieving students whose SAT and AP scores are exemplified in this report, our district is just as proud of the students who did not score high but have demonstrated tremendous growth and learning,” said Gupta. “These students are celebrated as well.”
Gupta explained the state’s requirement for high school graduation, specifically noting that the testing results criteria that must be demonstrated in order to show proficiency in the subject areas.
Results presented at the meeting, which are available for review on the district’s website, included results for the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (formerly known as PARCC) for grades 7 through 10 in the areas of English Arts & Literacy (ELA) and mathematics as well as SAT scores and Advanced Placement (AP) scores.
For students in grades 7 to 10 grade, Gupta said that 80 percent of the students taking the ELA exam scored a 4 or higher on a scale of 1 to 5. The state average of students in the same grade levels scoring a 4 or higher ranged from 55 percent to 63 percent.
According to Gupta, results for math proficiencies within the district ranged from 57-to-92 percent of students either meeting or exceeding a level 4 scoring compared to the state average of 29-to-46 percent for the same math courses.
The Class of 2019 scored an average of 539 in Reading/Evidence Based Reading and Writing (ERW). The mathematics average came in at 541, and the combined ERW and mathematics score was 1080.
In the West Essex district, 286 students took at least one AP exam last year, and 714 AP exams were taken in total. According to Gupta, 79.2 percent of exams were passed while 82.5 percent of exam results were scored at 3 or higher out of 5.
Ultimately, he said, the district scored significantly higher than the state averages in all testing areas.
