Great American Read Book Discussions

Four local libraries will be offering book discussions of novels chosen from PBS' Great American Read list of 100 favorite books. West Caldwell Public Library, 30 Clinton Road, will have a book discussion of the New York Times bestseller "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving on Monday, July 16 at 6:30 pm.

"A Prayer for Owen Meany" is set in the summer of 1953 as two 11-year-old boys, best friends, are playing in a Little League baseball game in New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills his best friend's mother. Owen Meany believes he didn't hit the ball by accident. He believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after 1953 is extraordinary and terrifying.  Judy Crawford, retired teacher from West Essex Regional High School, will lead the lively book discussion.

he Fairfield Public Library, 261 Hollywood Ave., will host a book discussion about the New York Times bestseller "The Book Thief"  by Markus Zusak on Monday, July 30 at 7:00 pm. Brianne Colombo, Library Director, will lead the lively book discussion.

Registration is required for both of these free book discussions and copies of both books are available at either Library.  Caldwell and Roseland Public Libraries will offer book discussions in September, but the titles and dates have not been chosen yet.
