West Caldwell Resident Janet O'Keeffe-Burke Provides First Hand Account of Macy's Thanksgiving Parade Balloons

November 22, 2012 at 12:24 AM

WEST CALDWELL, NJ - Excitement is in the air tonight as giant balloons are being filled up with helium in preparation for Macy’s 86th Annual Parade.  The parade begins at 9am and with just hours to spare, workers rush to meet the morning’s deadline.

West Caldwell’s Janet O'Keeffe-Burke was there amid the crowd, witnessing the flurry of activity.
Tonight, Burke provided a birds-eye view to The Alternative Press with her photography and she described the tour she and her family took as they walked the New York streets to view the balloons:

“So the place is CRAZY packed and the weather was great.
There were LOTS of people out.
It is set up so that you enter a barricaded area on Columbus Ave at 79th Street.
You walk south on Columbus on the West Side,  turn left onto 77th, and look at balloons the whole way down 77th Street.
Then you turn left in front of the museum on Central Park West,  and then left again on to 81st Street where there are more balloons.
Then left again onto Columbus Avenue  - and you exit again on 79th Street.”

Burke shared her photos of the Macy’s Star, Kermit the Frog, Papa Smurf and Hello Kitty on an airplane.

“We had never done it before, and it was fun.  Our kids are old enough to handle the on and off of the trains and subways.    There were lots of people with small kids and strollers;  I would NOT recommend that, there’s just no room to push them and kids can't see anything in the strollers since it is so crowded,” cautioned Burke.

West Essex TAP Facebook readers added their own thoughts:

Laura Giasone Gottlieb of Verona commented enthusiastically:
"If you have never been to this, you should go! It is absolutely amazing.
You get to see all of the balloons up close. Next year, both of my kids will be old enough to enjoy it (and stay up late enough to go). I can't wait to take them!"

West Caldwell’s Mary McCourt added, “It is even cooler than the parade!”

Janet O'Keeffe-Burke concluded: “It was really fun and a nice way to kick off the Celebrations of the season.”

When Smart Women Watch Stupid Television

“Hey honey, what time...” began my husband.

“Sssh, not now.” I replied.  “My show is on!” He glanced at the TV to see what I was watching, shook his head, and left the room muttering something sarcastic that sounded like, "Wow, I really hope she says yes to the dress."

It was true.  I had a stupid TV obsession.  I like ...

Pokémon Politics Go!

As a rule I stay away from popular fads.  Politics included.

I find my views on the latest crazy trends that are sweeping the nation are usually wrong and completely out of touch with reality.

For example, for years I have been predicting the imminent demise of cell phones and the internet.

Which is why it seems only appropriate that I expound on ...
