LIVINGSTON, NJ — Michael H. Karu, CPA/CFF, senior member at Livingston-based accounting firm Levine, Jacobs & Company, LLC, recently provided much-needed insight on the government sending stimulus checks to deceased individuals.

In the segment, entitled “Coronavirus Stimulus Checks Being Sent To Dead People As Unemployed Americans Await Needed Funds,” Karu spoke with reporter Lisa Rozner about how this can happen in some cases.

“Checks are sent based on when someone filed a tax return with the IRS and not the Social Security Administration, which is the agency that tracks deaths,” said Karu. “So, for example, if somebody passed away at the beginning of 2020 and has not yet filed their 2019 tax return […] there would be no indication to the IRS that the person died.”
