Local Shopping Recommendations around Essex, Morris and Passaic Counties

November 26, 2012 at 2:16 PM

WEST ESSEX, NJ - This past Saturday, November 24th, was designated as Small Business Saturday.  More and more, people are going back to their hometowns to shop and support the local small business owners.  While it’s comfortable to wander around a mall hoping you’ll find everything you are searching for, normally those stores are crowded, and the nationally owned chains won’t often give you the customer service you’ll receive in a smaller brick and mortar location.

An anonymous quote found on the web really says it all:

“When you buy from a small Mom or Pop business,
you are not helping a CEO buy a third vacation home.
You are helping a Little Girl get dance lessons,
a Little Boy get his team jersey,
a Mom or Dad put food on the table,
a Family pay a mortgage,
or a Student pay for college.
Our Customers are our Shareholders and they are the ones we strive to make happy.
Thank you for supporting Our Small Business.”

Malinda Giannetti of Roseland recommends her favorite Fairchilds Market in downtown Roseland on Eagle Rock Avenue.  She commented, “I love shopping in Fairchilds. They have food, wine, gifts and really great service.”
Their website reads, “At Fairchilds Market, we are focused on bringing our customers the finest quality food and service.  It’s what we call LOV— Libations, Oddments and Victuals.  Fresh food sourced from local suppliers is prepared daily to deliver fresh homemade products to our customers. Whatever we don’t produce in our market is sourced with real passion for quality and excellence.  At Fairchilds, we pride ourselves in giving our customers that “little bit extra”...and maybe even a little left over for man’s best friend.”

Shopping online with local owners is one way to keep supporting small business.
Carol Ann Messina from Fredon, NJ finds it very easy using the gift baskets available through Corrado’s:  “I recommend Corrados to all my family and business clients and want to thank them for doing such a great job! I heard on a commercial on 106.7 Lite fm that Corrado's was offering FREE SHIPPING anywhere in the country using Fed Ex ground. My company has general contractors working in many different areas of the country so this was perfect for me and seemed like a good deal. I was able to do all the shopping online on their gift basket website.  Their selections are great and I used the customer service office too and they were really helpful.  The value was OUTSTANDING and also I received notes that the gifts arrived as beautiful as they were pictured on the website! GREAT JOB!!”

Gift baskets on the Corrado’s website range from a ‘Welcome Pineapple’ gift crate to a ‘Fit for a King’ basket featuring over 20 pounds of gourmet specialty Cheese, Italian Meats, Sauces, Bread Sticks, Coffee, Chocolates, Nuts, Desserts along with 4 bottles of fine wine.  No matter the price, the website lists that all items receive the free shipping.  The baskets are prepared locally in Northern New Jersey and then shipped nationwide.

West Caldwell’s Megan Hladik quickly named Piquant Accessories in Caldwell as one of her favorite places to shop, “Piquant on Bloomfield Avenue is really nice and she has great gifts, too.”
Dea Viola of North Caldwell agreed: “I love Piquant’s prices - the store has beautiful clothes, things for hair, jewelry, handbags and even things for kids.  The owner is lovely, she provides for a great shopping experience and really makes everyone feel welcome. She has a lot of specials and over the summer she had free flip-flops with any purchase.”
Piquant is a second floor location, the staircase is right by Paintland, going up to a second floor entrance over  the laundromat.  The photos on Facebook show a really pretty collection of clothing, jewelry and accessories.

Laura Salamone recommends Unique Photo in her town of Fairfield:  “Unique has all your camera needs. They have camera equipment, studio equipment,  rentals,  classes and workshops. They’re very helpful and they have friendly service. They’re in Fairfield on Route 46.”
Their website describes Unique Photo as a “Superstore” carrying everything any camera enthusiast could possibly be searching for.  Every type of Digital and Film camera accessory, along with lighting for studios, printing and audio and video supplies;  they do seem to have it all.

Lisa Nicol of Caldwell enjoys shopping on Bloomfield Avenue, “I absolutely love Pink Bungalow and the store right by it,  Smith & Co. near Smull Avenue.“
Pink Bungalow owns 3 locations in Ridgewood, Upper Montclair and their newest location is in Caldwell.  They are well known for their Vera Bradley products and carry the motif throughout the decor of the store.  They also carry stationery, jewelry, and gift items.  Right next door is Smith & Co which carries a large array of giftware.

Timothy Mariconda in Fairfield enjoys shopping at Asalt & Buttery Bakery in Little Falls.
"It’s a really nice place they’ve got... the Cherry Mac is the best!!!!" enthused Timothy.
The bakery’s website describes that they bake French Macarons in 20 different flavors including Tahitian Vanilla, Hazelnut Ganache, Pear, Fiori Di Sicilia, Blood Orange, Salt Caramel, Green Tea, Raspberry with Chocolate Ganache, Lavender Honey, Passion Fruit, Black Currant, and many more.  The bakery also offers Croissants, Scones and other desserts.

Lori Madalena of Fairfield enjoys shopping in the little stores:  “Downtown Denville has the cutest shops, I love WISH, and the candy shop has the cutest little chachkies for gift giving! Broadway Florist has great accessories and gift ideas too!”
According to Wish’s Facebook page,  they carry jewelry and unique clothing accessories, some which are handmade.
Broadway Floral and Gift Gallery describes their offerings as “Great Gift Ideas for Any Occasion ~ Liven up any room or office with lush green and blooming plants or dish gardens. Choose from our selection of unique gift items and decorative accessories, including art glass, pottery, full line of Brighton accessories, handbags, framed prints, handcrafted jewelry, picture frames, silk & dried floral arrangements, baby gifts, plush stuffed animals, balloons, scented candles, home décor and much more!”

Parents are the Only Hope for New Jersey Public Education

September 29, 2016

I really wanted to take one of my precious few PTO days I had left to drive down to Trenton on September 7th and tell the State Board of Education how disappointed I was in them, again... but more important things were going on.

There was a Kindergarten bus to catch and a first day of school morning to have and I had already wasted 2 of those precious days on a state BOE that has all but ...

Charitable IRA rollover can pay off in more ways than one

If you have a traditional IRA, your money can grow on a tax-deferred basis, but sooner or later you’ll have to start taking taxable withdrawals from your account. But what if you could make these withdrawals less “taxing,” while at the same time supporting a charitable group? Using a Charitable IRA rollover, you can do just that!

To begin with, the basic rule governing ...

Letting the Jean-ie Out of the Bottle

Sometime between the end of last spring and the beginning of this fall, someone snuck into my closet and shrunk all my jeans.  I tried to convince my husband that we had a problem with the dryer, but since all of his jeans still fit, it was a hard sell.  Without thinking it through, he scoffed and suggested that maybe it wasn't the jeans – maybe it was ...
