WEST CALDWELL, NJ — While many schools shut their doors for the summer, operations continue through the hottest months at The Orchard School in West Caldwell.
This Q & A session with Erin Moss, director of The Orchard School, provides some insights into the summer months ans what is ahead at the school:
Q: We understand you had a graduation/summer party recently. How was that?
Moss: We had such a great party. It was held at the school on a Saturday and the kids learned special songs and dances to perform. We had a lot of food and drinks for the kids to enjoy. It was a fun day for everyone.
Q: What kind of activities did you do for the children?
Moss: We held a big picnic. Every child received a Diploma whether or not they ‘graduated’. Each of the children received a Superlative such as ‘Most Musical’, ‘Most Imaginative’, “Most Artistic’, ‘Most Athletic’, etc. Everyone received something. The kids also played games and we even had a piñata.
Q: Although Orchard School is open year round – was this an end-of-the-year party?
Moss: The school is, in fact, open all year round except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day and July 4. But we do recognize life events like graduation and the change of seasons. The party is somewhat like an end of the year party. We find it to be a fantastic way to kick off the summer, especially for those who won’t be returning until September or will be moving on to the next step.
Q: It’s notable that activity continues on through the summer at Orchard. How do you go about making sure each moment is memorable for the children?
Moss: Every child receives a scrapbook that marks their progress – even if they are not graduating – they still get a scrapbook. It’s a fun way for them to look back over the year and see how much they have grown.
Q: Your school is operational with hardly any breaks. What is a typical day like during the summer months?
Moss: We have the same curriculum, only we go outside and play much more. We still have academics, music, socialization – we keep a routine that everyone is used to and likes. And when September rolls around – everyone is excited to discuss what they did all summer!
Q: How can parents contact you for more information about Orchard School?
Moss: They can e-mail me at email@example.com, they can call the school at (973) 575-8787, they can stop by at 360 Passaic Ave., West Caldwell, and I want to invite everyone to schedule a tour.
