WEST CALDWELL, NJ — Prior to providing updates on the local response to the COVID-19 pandemic during Tuesday’s virtual council meeting, the governing body of West Caldwell held a moment of silence to acknowledge the recent death of former First Lady Olga Reiher due to complications from COVID-19.

Reiher, who was recently living in an assisted living facility in Roseland, was the wife of former mayor Robert Reiher, who served as a councilman from 1975-1981 and as mayor from 1981-1998. The township has previously honored the couple by dedicating the “Reiher Family Meeting Room” at the West Caldwell Public Library.

"I will always have a soft heart for the Reihers, who were very kind to me since I met them when I was in my late teens," said Mayor Joseph Tempesta. "Former Mayor Reiher and Olga actually encouraged me to get involved in the community on boards and ultimately run for town council. I will miss her as I miss her husband, Bob.

"I spoke to their daughter Nancy and obviously Nancy is heartbroken. She and I had a good conversation and I promised her that the community would respectfully honor her mom by putting bunting up on our municipal building at some point in the future when it's appropriate. May she rest in peace."
