ESSEX FELLS, NJ — A visit from an Essex Fells resident carrying a suspicious package just before 8 a.m. on Friday prompted police to call the Essex County Bomb Squad and the Nutley Fire Department HAZMAT to investigate.
The package, described by Essex County police as a “small padded envelope,” was determined to be safe following a thorough inspection. Officers cordoned off a safety zone to keep people nearby at an appropriate distance, but no evacuation was necessary, according to police.
Essex Fells Police Chief William Theilacker urged community members not to transport suspicious or dangerous items to their local police department. Instead, residents should dial 9-1-1 and should avoid touching or handling the item.
