SPARTA, NJ -- Sparta pulled away in the third quarter and went on to defeat the West Essex boys basketball team, 71-54, in the first round of the Section 1, Group 3 state tournament Monday night.

Chris Corbo sank four 3-pointers and scored 14 points for West Essex (13-11), which took an 18-15 lead after one quarter. Sparta had a 36-28 lead by halftime, and broke away by outscoring the Knights, 18-8, in the third quarter to build an 18-point advantage.

Matthew Filippini finished with 12 points--his second-highest output of the season--and Garrett Kessler connected for 10 points for West Essex. Henry Sanok contributed eight points for the Knights.
