WEST CALDWELL, NJ — The Caldwell girls soccer team rallied with two goals in the second half to take a 2-1 victory over Bloomfield in the first game of the 2020 season on Friday.
The game marked the debut of new Caldwell head coach Kelli Fernicola and the end of an era. Fernicola has replaced Mike Teshkoyan as the Lady Chiefs' head coach. Teshkoyan launched the girls soccer program at Caldwell in 1985 and had been the program's only head coach until this year.
"I would like the opportunity to thank my brother Mark, who has been with me from the start, and of course all the wonderful young women who added so much talent, character and charisma to the program," Teshkoyan told TAPinto West Essex last week. "We couldn't have run such a successful program without their many outstanding contributions and traditions that they established. I believe that the 2020 team will be strong and competitive."
Fernicola was a member of Caldwell's 2009 state championship team coached by the Teshkoyan brothers.
On Friday, Angela Nicol and Megan Blankenship scored the goals in Caldwell's comeback victory. Shayne Stafford made six saves for the Lady Chiefs.
Although he has retired from coaching girls soccer, Teshkoyan will continue at the helm of thre Caldwell softball program next spring. Teshkoyan had 362 victories in his girls soccer coaching career.
Caldwell's next game is Tuesday afternoon at Nutley.
