NORTH CALDWELL, NJ -- Six different players scored touchdowns and West Essex built a big early lead on its way to a 41-21 football victory over Madison on Friday night.
The Knights (3-1) had a 20-0 lead by the middle of the second quarter before Madison scored. Joseph Lombardo scored on a 7-yard run with two minutes left in the first quarter and Tyler Logan kicked the first of his five extra points to give West Essex a 7-0 lead.
A 4-yard TD run by Ryan Coyle early in the second quarter extended West Essex' advantage to 13-0 before Nicholas Barnes scooped up a Madison fumble and returned it 45 yards for a TD with six minutes to go in the half as the Knights pulled ahead, 20-0.
Madison returned an interception for a TD with four minutes left in the half, but West Essex responded with a 26-yard TD run by Chris Bell with a minute left as the Knights went into the locker room with a 27-7 lead.
Nick Ciaglia's 43-yard TD run with nine minutes left in the third quarter boosted the Knights' lead to 34-7. Madison drew closer with two TD passes in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, but West Essex put the game on ice when Cristian Cataldo took off for a 56-yard TD run with six minutes left.
