OAKLAND, NJ -- The West Essex softball team scored all its runs in the first two innings and held on for a 6-5 victory over Indian Hills Friday in the semifinal round of the Section 1, Group 3 state tournament.

Jessica Coia went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored for West Essex (14-10), which led, 6-1, after three-run innings in both of its first two at-bats. Alissa Gallion went 3-for-4 with one RBI and Gianna Waack singled in a run in the victory.

Winning pitcher Julia Vardiman allowed three earned runs, struck out three and walked none in seven innings. She also singled and scored a run.
