ATLANTIC CITY, NJ -- Bardhyl Gashi of West Essex came in third in all of New Jersey in the 285-pound weight class at the NJSIAA individual wrestling championships at Boardwalk Hall this weekend.
Gashi won two round before losing in the quarterfinals. That sent him into the wrestleback consolations, where he ran the table with four victories, capping that run with a pin of Marcus Estevez of Franklin in 3:43 in the third-place final.
Gashi started his journey in the third-place tournament with a pin of Tim Lindonici of Colts Neck in 3:21. He proceeded to decision Liam Akers of North Hunterdon, 9-3, and Hector Lebron of Englewood, 3-2.
In the 285-pound championship bracket, Gashi had opened the weekend with a 7-0 decision over Austin Scott of South Plainfield, then scored a 12-3 major decision over Jakob Shapiro of Fair Lawn. The only blemish on Gashi's weekend in A.C. was a 3-2 decision loss to Justin Wright of Howell in the championship quarterfinal.
Darren Jones and Alex Jones also represented West Essex in Atlantic City. Darren Jones scored a big upset victory in the preliminary round of the 138-pound championship tournament, defeating Eddie Hummel of Southern, 6-3. Al DeSantis of Shore Regional defeated Darren Jones in a 6-3 decision in the next round. John Howe of Cherry Hill West took out Darren Jones, 4-0, in the first round of the third-place wrestleback tournament.
Darren Jones has the distinction this season of recording victories in three different weight classes--138, 145 and 152.
Alex Jones lost, 15-6, to Jason Smith in the preliminary round of the 145-pound tournament, then went out in a 6-4 decision at the hands of Ronald McCoy in the first bout in the third-place wrestleback tournament. Alex Jones recorded multiple victories this season in three different weight groups--145, 152 and 160.
