CHESTER, NJ – If you are looking for a fun and tasty morning out, this Sunday, August 2, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Alstede Farms in Chester, NJ, is offering an all-you-can-eat Peach breakfast, featuring peach pancakes, eggs, bacon and more, at Harvest Hall on the Farms. Adults are $12.99; $6.99 for kids over two; kids under two are free.

While an all-you-can-eat country breakfast and trip to the country may sound fun and tasty--there is much more to do at Alstedes.

At a time when family farms are being paved over by developers, Alstede Farms is thriving, successfully preserving 400 acres of land in Morris County, which has helped define not only Chester but the entire region. “The character of the town and region would be so different if it had been developed,” said Kurt Alstede, general manager of Alstede Farms.

Alstede was born and raised in Chester. In 1982, he purchased a cattle and hay farm and began to transition it into what Alstede Farms is today -- hundreds of acres of preserved farmland containing nearly 100 acres of pick-your-own fruit and vegetables, a country store fully stocked with over 200 items sourced at Alstede, freshly-prepared food, ice cream and slushies, as well as family fun attractions including animals, a corn maze, hayrides, a climbable haystack, and for the next few weeks--a vast sunflower maze. And, on Saturday and Sunday, a live band plays from noon to 4 p.m.

Alstede Farms is also home to Alstede and his extended family, whose homes are nestled away overlooking a pond and crops. Alstede employs more than 50 people and during peak seasons, well over 150 people.

“Our goal is to make real agriculture accessible to everyone,” Alstede told TAPinto.

Whether one shops in the country store or picks his/her own crops, locally-grown farm fresh produce is within the reach of anyone who pays a visit to Alstede Farms.

Allstede also participates in fourteen Farmers Markets throughout New Jersey and New York. In addition, they offer field trips for schools and also offer a CSA program.

Alstede Farms has over 100 acres for picking right now including peaches, blueberries, raspberries, tomatoes, string beans, eggplants, sweet corn, and cut flowers.

In addition, Alstede is building a cider mill, which should be ready by sometime this Fall, so that Alstede can begin producing cider and reduce apple waste. Cider will be pressed every Friday morning in September.

“Everything we do is sustainable. We don’t waste a strawberry. If one is bruised, we turn it into a slushy,” said Alstede.

“The appeal of local agriculture and access to the farm and family time is universal,” Alstede said. “For people of every language and every culture, there is a universal desire to be out and on the farm.”

Admission is free Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon. Admission from noon on and on Fridays is $5.00 per person plus tax. Admission on Saturdays and Sundays is $6.99 per person plus tax. Fruits and vegetables are priced by pound.

Groundhog Day. The day a tiny mammal’s shadow tells us when winter will come to an end. Me? I prefer my weather forecast in the form of a white raven (the telltale changing of seasons in Westeros).

For a few days, rumors spread that Game of Thrones will not return for its final season until April 2019, and while it was clarified that the April return date was likely a false rumor, HBO ...

Paterson Firefighter Opens Up About Struggles, Urges Others not to Suffer in Silence

February 8, 2018

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - Not a week goes by when a tale of heroism and bravery on the part of firefighters is not told. For them, running into a burning building is as natural as running out of one is for the rest of us.

That became apparent again on Monday when members of the Paterson Fire Department responded to a fire at 268 Main Street, which led to the eventual total collapse of ...
