WEST ORANGE, NJ - An attempted car theft occurred Sunday morning on Moore Terrace.
According to the owner of the car, police believe that a "crew" of thieves started at the top of the street, checking each driveway for unlocked cars.
"We habitually lock our car doors," said the owner, "but I remember last night I had five helium balloons that I was taking out and it was windy. So no, I don't think the car was locked."
When the thieves reached the victim's house, they found his Lexus SUV unlocked and proceeded to roll it backwards out of the driveway.
The theft, however, was unsuccessful thanks to Moore Terrace's steep hill. As the thieves rolled the SUV backwards, they lost control as the momentum of the moving car accelerated them backwards. The SUV finally rolled onto the neighbor's yard across the street and became wedged between the front yard and the driveway's retaining wall.
The neighbors across the street reported that they thought the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m..
The victim became aware of the situation at approximately 6:20 a.m. and reported it to West Orange police, who responded promptly.
