WEST ORANGE, NJ – Last season’s Colonial Division champions, the West Orange boys tennis team, is gearing up to capture the 2018 title, and the Mountaineers have the ability to deliver. Their record is currently 3-3 as the season begins in earnest.
Senior co-captains Chris Randolph (Second Singles) and Xavier Abelson (Third Singles) are enthusiastic about this season. There are eight seniors on the team, and four of them are starting, with the balance comprised of up-and-coming players to watch.
Both Randolph and Abelson pointed to sophomore Karan Belday (First Singles) as their strongest player. Belday has played the longest, takes lessons, and plays year-round. They also named Tanveer Quereshi and Matt Carlos as players to watch.
“Even though we have a lot of newer players, we have a fitness and competitive advantage,” said head coach Jeff Mazurek. "The players work very hard and enjoy the game, and they're doing very well with their skills.
“Now that the weather is improving, we’ll make up time for practices and get more play time on the courts. We should win the division again and we want to advance in the Essex County Tournament.”
While Randolph and Abelson look forward to their futures (Randolph plans to attend NYIT or Rutgers to study Architecture, while Abelson plans to attend Rutgers or the University of Massachussetts-Amherst to study Health Sciences and Public Health), they have their eyes firmly focused on the goals of the team.
“We are going to try our best and put our all into it,” they said. “It’s a team effort and it’s about winning games.”
