Call for Art Submissions: ValleyArts Launches Open Orange Juried Art Exhibition

WEST ORANGE, NJ - ValleyArts is calling artists from New York and New Jersey to submit Paintings, Photography, Prints, Mixed-Media, and Works on Paper for their  - Exhibition to Be Held May 9-June 8 at ValleyArts Firehouse Gallery and Nearby Spaces on the Orange/West Orange border.  The deadline for submissions is March 9, 2014. 

Artists from New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area are invited to submit their works for ValleyArts' inaugural Open Orange juried exhibition, which will take place May 9-June 8 at the ValleyArts Firehouse Gallery and nearby spaces in the Valley Arts District of Orange and West Orange NJ.

Online image submission of works in any 2D medium - including paintings, photographs, prints, mixed-media works and works on paper - are due by March 9, and will be evaluated by a distinguished team of jurors. One top prize, Best in Show, will offer an artist the opportunity for a one-person exhibition at the Firehouse Galley in the 2014-15 season.

The nationally prominent jurors who will evaluate and select the works to be placed in the Open Orange exhibition are Antonio Sergio Bessa, director of curatorial and educational programs for the Bronx Museum; Diedra Harris-Kelley, co-director of the Romare Bearden Foundation; and Naima J. Keith, assistant curator of the Studio Museum of Harlem. 

Artists may submit up to three works with maximum dimensions of 36" x 36," including frame.  All original artwork in any 2D format will be considered (paintings, drawings, photographs, prints and mixed-media 2D works). There is a non-refundable $35 entry fee per application. "The new Open Orange juried exhibition continues our initiative to serve artistsand feature the best of the arts from our community and the surrounding region," said Richard Bryant, executive director of ValleyArts. "The Firehouse Gallery, a beautiful space which opened just last year, has already proved to be a popular venue. Our plan for this exhibition is that it will continue to spread the word about the burgeoning arts community in Orange and West Orange, sparking even more interactivity and interconnection with artists throughout New Jersey and the greater metropolitan area." 

Bryant thanked the volunteer leaders of Open Orange, Nigel Freeman and Jeremy Moss, and the ValleyArts Visual Arts Advisory Committee for their invaluable work in creating, planning and launching the event.  "We intend this to be the first of many Open Orange exhibitions to come," he added. 

The Open Orange exhibition overlaps ValleyArts' second annual Hat City Streets Festival on June 7, 2014.  More than 2,000 people attended the Hat City Streets Festival last year.  In addition to the Open Orange Exhibition in various indoor spaces, this year's Festival will feature an outdoor fine art marketplace, student exhibitions from Orange Public Schools, family craft areas, and a day-long series of concert events.

The ValleyArts Firehouse Gallery, located at 580 Forest Street in Orange, is a beautifully renovated and repurposed historic firehouse that opened in 2013 as a signature visual gallery space for ValleyArts and its artists.  The gallery hosts an array of exhibitions, shows and events throughout the year.
