WEST ORANGE, NJ - Sam and Rose Paparatto have announced that they are celebrating their 70th anniversary at home at Green Hill retirement community in West Orange on March 4. As a gift to his wife, Sam wrote the following statement, which includes tips for a long and healthy marriage, and has asked for it to be shared with the community:
Rose and I have been blessed with our lives since the day we met in the summer of 1939, at the age of 18. We had a five-year courtship; the last two years I was in the army. I was discharged in December of 1944 and we were married on March 4, 1945, when we were 23.
No, it was not an easy life, but when there is a will you find a way to make it work. We have been blessed with 70 years of marriage plus five years of courtship andare still going. We have the greatest four sons that you can ask for as well as four grandsons and one granddaughter.
Rose and I are thankful for our parents who taught us what life is really like. Thanks for my wisdom of saying yes, my love, no matter what she says or does. In reality, we have been blessed because life is not made; it is what you make of it. It is also important to talk things over and not fight over them. Never go to bed mad at one another; kiss each other and wake up for a new day tomorrow. Getting along is what makes our marriage happy.
Sam and Rose have four sons, Joseph, Michael, Thomas and Sam Jr., and five grandchildren.
“Sam and Rose are valued members of our Green Hill community,” said Executive Director and President Toni Lynn Davis. “They enjoy being together and participating in all of our activities and events. Sam and Rose’s love and longevity are an inspiration to the whole Green Hill family.”
