Eventful Week Coming Up in West Orange, September 9-15


WEST ORANGE, NJ - It's an eventful week in West Orange as students head back to school, groups and commissions start fall meetings, and Old Timer's Day at Colgate Park recognizes West Orange greats.

Monday, Sept. 9

It's Back to School for West Orange Public School students.  Remember, the Alternative Press of West Orange welcomes your "back to school" photos for a pictorial article, and the township wants you to submit them for a contest to win an iPad. Drive safely.

NJ American Water road closures in the Gregory section for Sept. 8 and 9:

Mitchell Street between Valley Road and the Orange line:
Closed both Saturday, Sept. 7 and Monday, Sept. 9

South Valley Road between Silver Spring Road and Luddington Road
Closed Monday September 9 after 8:30 am.

There will be an Open Space Meeting at Town Hall from 7:00-9:00 pm.

Tuesday, September 10

There will be a Planning Board meeting at Town Hall from 7:30-10:00 pm.

Wednesday, September 11

Essex County Remembers: The Annual 9/11 Ceremony at Eagle Rock Reservation, will begin at 8:00 am.

There will be Downtown West Orange Alliance Meeting at Town Hall from 6:30-8:30.

There will be a Historic Preservation Commission Meeting at Town Hall from 7:00-9:00 pm.

Thursday, September 12

Essex County Executive and expected guest Governor Chris Christie will dedicate and open the new Education Center at Turtle Back Zoo at 9:30 am.

The West Orange Writer's Group will meet from 7:00-8:30 at the West Orange Public Library.

The Public Relations Commission will meet at Town Hall from 7:00-9:00 pm.

The Zoning Board will meet at Town Hall from 8:00-10:30 pm.

Dan Duca and the Shillelagh Club host another Open Mic Night beginning at 9:00 pm.  

Friday, September 13

The Farmer's Market will be held in the Quigley Parking Lot at the intersection of Harrison Street, Eagle Rock Avenue, and Main Street, from 12:00-6:00 pm.

Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, located at 9 Manger Road, will dedicate its new outdoor fitness area at 6:00.  The community is invited to attend and will be able to utilize the new facilities.

Saturday, September 14

A workshop sponsored by Essex County, Effective Marketing Strategies, will be held at the West Orange Public Library from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.  The event is free to non-profits but registration is required.

Old Timer's Day, a West Orange tradition, continues at 12:00 pm at Colgate Field.


September 21: West Orange Football Opening Game with Family Activities and More, 4:00 - 7:00 pm, followed by the opening Home Game "Under the Lights" at 7:00 pm.

September 22: Run/Walk for Nikhil at West Orange High School, 7:30 am.

September 22: Annual West Orange Town Picnic, with Home Improvement Workshops, 1:00 - 4:00 pm at Liberty Middle School.

September 29: Mayor's 5K Ovarian Run/Walk Run at 10:00 am,, Kids Fun Run at 9:30.  Register here.
