EAST ORANGE, NJ — After yielding a first-quarter touchdown, the West Orange football team shut East Orange out over the final three quarters and came back for a 17-7 victory on Saturday.
The Mountaineers (3-1) trailed, 7-3, at halftime before Shakhi Carson gave them the lead with a 4-yard TD run with 2:21 left in the third quarter. Out of the pistol formation, Mason Murdock handed to Carson, who crashed in around right tackle for the score. Owen Murphy's extra point gave West Orange a 10-7 lead.
West Orange extended its lead early in the final quarter. On fourth down and 11, Mason Murdock connected with Makhi Green on a 26-yard TD pass with 10:09 left on a deep post pattern. Murdock's throw was just over the coverage of the Jaguars' defensive back and into Green's hands inside the 5-yard line. Murphy's kick made it 17-7.
Murphy's 31-yard field goal in the first quarter had provided West Orange with its first points following an early 2-yard TD run by Matthew Zaio of East Orange.
The victory was the third straight for West Orange following an opening night loss to St. Peter's Prep, regarded by many as the state's top team. The Mountaineers are scheduled to play at home against Livingston next Friday at 7 p.m.
