WEST ORANGE, NJ – In the past week, the West Orange girls basketball team has defeated top teams Newark Tech and Saddle River Day in dramatic fashion, and on Saturday took a 41-35 victory over Arts in the quarterfinal of the Essex County Tournament.
Mya Bembry led the third-seeded Mountaineers with 16 points and Nathali Simpson followed her with eight. Fredreyah Howard and Alathea Bearfield led sixth-seeded Arts with eight and seven points, respectively.
"This is the second time that the girls basketball team advanced to the semifinals game since I have been here and we hope to take it all," said head coach Caneice Williams. "Last year, we came up short with a buzzer-beater in overtime, and this year we feel that we are mentally prepared for the end of situations in competitive games. By playing Newark Tech last week, the match up will be very familiar so the girls just need to come to play."
West Orange will play Newark Tech in the semifinals at Weequahic High School on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.
