MONTCLAIR, NJ -- Montclair scored one goal in each half and went on to defeat defending champion West Orange, 2-1, in the Section 1, Group 4 girls soccer final Thursday afternoon.
Montclair (19-0-2) had a 1-0 lead at halftime and kept West Orange (16-4) off the scoreboard until Natalie Nevins scored with 11 minutes to go, bringing the Mountaineers within 2-1. Nevins, a senior midfielder, finished the season with 27 goals and 23 assists.
Cassidy Joyce finished with six saves in goal for West Orange, which won its first sectional championship in 2018 with a victory over Livingston.
West Orange's 2019 season began with a 3-0 loss to Montclair. After losing to Millburn in their third game of the season, the Mountaineers went 15-1 before Thursday's loss in the sectional final.
