WEST ORANGE, NJ - An opening reception for the photography of Gaelen Juried Art Show award winners, West Orange resident and President of the West Orange Arts Council Bill Cofone and Heidi Sussman, a freelance photographer, also from West Orange, will be held at the JCC Metro West, on Sunday, Jan. 11, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The new exhibit called, “Faces and Traces,” which will be on view through Feb. 22, is located in the Gaelen Gallery East at the Leon and Toby Cooperman JCC, Ross Family Campus, 760 Northfield Ave., in West Orange.
Sussman, a freelance photographer and illustrator, represents the “Traces” portion of the show. Her images are illustrations from “People of the Stones,” a collection of short stories she wrote where the observer is never sure if the subjects exist in the past or present. In addition to photography, Sussman creates photo-based mixed media pieces, combining traditional media such as pastels and pencils as well as digital art media with her photographs. Sussman also often adds wax to create photo encaustics for a softer, more ethereal effect.
In describing his portraits displayed in “Faces and Traces,” photographer Cofone, a former insurance company executive stated, “Our face reflects the totality of our existence. Our essence is expressed on our face. I use photography to express and learn about myself … to attempt to show the essence of life.”
