WEST ORANGE, NJ -- James Benjamin of West Orange placed first in the 126-pound weight class at the Essex County Tournament championships this weekend.
As a team, West Orange finished seventh out of 21 teams with 95 points.
Benjamin defeated Conner Decker of Seton Hall Prep, 2-0, in the championship match at 126. Colin Morgan of West Orange was the runner-up at 160 pounds. He reached the final, where he lost to Alex Jones of West Essex, who recorded a pin in 1:20.
Edgar Moreno of West Orange came in third at 138 pounds, and Brian DiPalma was fourth at 182 pounds for the Mountaineers.
Benjamin reached the finals by defeating Brandon Costello of Belleville, 10-4, in the quarterfinals, and Agostin Petrillo of Livingston, 2-0, in the semifinals. Benjamin won each of his last two bouts by 2-0 scores.
At 160, Morgan got past John Pavia of Verona with a pin in 1:04 in the quarterfinals. He then pinned Hakim Fennell of Belleville in 1:15.
At 138, Moreno won his quarterfinal match over Will Dye of Cedar Grove in 5:56 by an 18-3 score. In the semis, Moreno lost to Darren Jones of West Essex, 6-4, in an ultimate tiebreaker. Moreno beat Jacob Gonzalez of Nutley, 8-7, in the medal match for third place.
At 182, DiPalma pinned Michael LaTorre of Nutley in 3:35 in the quarterfinals. Zach Merlino of Seton Hall Prep then pinned DiPalma in 5:48 in the semifinals.
Damianlee Torres of West Orange placed sixth at 120 pounds. Amadu Kamara of West Orange placed eighth in the 220-pound class. Dorian Rawls of West Orange came in eighth at 152.
