WEST ORANGE, NJ - In a unanimous vote at the April 28 Board of Education meeting, Jeffrey Rutzky was named the new Superintendent of the West Orange School District. Rutzky will begin work on July 1 with a four-year contract and a starting salary of $177,500.

Rutzky is currently the Superintendent of the Roseland School District and also works with the regional middle and high schools in Essex Fells on curriculum and development. His previous experience includes middle school principal in the Parsippany-Troy Hills School District, elementary school principal in the Ridgefield School District and assistant high school principal in the Teaneck School District.

"We received several applications for the Superintendent's position," said Board President Sandra Mordecai, "and Mr. Rutzky quickly rose to the top."

Board members Michelle Casalino, Laura Lab, Ron Charles, and Mark Robertson echoed Mordecai's sentiments as they welcomed him to the West Orange School District.

Washington Elementary School Principal Marie DeMaio, who is also the president of the West Orange Administrator's Association; Mark Maniscalco, the president of the West Orange Education Association (teacher's union); and Carol Fastiggi, co-president of the West Orange Council of PTAs, also greeted Rutzky, who then spoke briefly to the audience.

"I was told many years ago that a good Superintendent must know all levels of education," Rutzky said. 

"I am honored to be the next Superintendent and look forward to working with Administration, teachers, and support staff." Rutzky went on to say that the support staff  "do not get recognized enough" for all their hard work and dedication.

"As educators, our job is about kids," Rutzky noted as he described his perspective on balancing curriculums and budgets. 

Meet and greets with teachers and administrators will be held this week and parents, along with the community, will be apprised of their opportunities to meet with Rutzky shortly.

"My job is to listen to what's important to you," said Rutzky. "We need to talk about what's working well and what we could be doing better".
